Hygienic standard for drinking water

With the increasing pollution of modern living environments, the Chinese government has introduced a new sanitary standard for drinking water to safeguard public health and improve the quality of life. Since July 1, 2007, China has fully implemented an updated version of the drinking water standard that was last revised in 1985. This standard sets strict limits on harmful substances in drinking water to ensure it is safe for human consumption and does not pose any risk to health over time.

The Chinese government has always prioritized environmental hygiene and public health. Poor water quality can lead to the spread of infectious diseases, which is why it's essential to eliminate harmful microorganisms, including viruses, from our daily water supply. The newly issued standard also emphasizes that chemical substances in water should not cause immediate or long-term harm to the human body, ensuring a higher level of safety for consumers.

To ensure that people can enjoy clean and safe drinking water, the standard includes various sensory and chemical indicators. Out of the 35 new sanitary criteria, 15 focus on the appearance and general chemical properties of water. Additional requirements cover radioactive elements and microbial content, all aimed at preventing any potential health risks associated with drinking water.

As China’s economy continues to grow and the population increases rapidly, many regions are facing water shortages. Combined with rising levels of urban water pollution, the safety of daily drinking water has become a growing concern. The old standards were no longer sufficient, prompting the first major revision since 1985. A wide range of government departments collaborated under the supervision of a management committee to finalize the updated guidelines. The new standard now includes 71 parameters, covering both organic matter and microorganisms, and has unified the quality requirements for both urban and rural areas across the country.

When purchasing bottled or packaged drinking water, it's important to check if the product carries the QS logo, which indicates it meets national safety standards. Choosing well-known brands and carefully reading the label can help ensure you're getting safe and reliable water. Truly safe drinking water should be clear, odorless, and free of sediment. If you notice any unusual smell, taste, or cloudiness, it's best to avoid drinking it. With the implementation of the new national standards, there are now clearer regulations and reporting mechanisms in place to address any issues promptly and protect public health effectively.
