Epson PaperLab System: Waste Paper 3D Printing New Paper

Recently, Epson, the world-renowned printer manufacturer, has developed PaperLab, which is considered to be the world's first compact office papermaking system. This machine can transform old office waste paper into a new one through a process similar to 3D printing . A 3D printer is available. In a sense, this PaperLab system is a 3D printer that can "print" paper.

A3 and A4 size copy paper is one of the most commonly used consumables in the office, with millions of papers being used every day around the world, although many of these will eventually be recycled. However, the recycling of traditional waste paper involves a huge system. Many papers are collected and transported long distances to reach the recycling factory, and then become new paper and then distributed to users. This is a long cycle, and Epson hopes to develop a streamlined localization system to recycle and reuse old paper, which will greatly reduce the above loop and reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, PaperLab was born.

PaperLab is a fully localized system that can be installed in the corner of the office. It safely destroys used paper and then turns them into office paper without using water, creating a paper loop inside the office. This not only eliminates the need to ship waste paper, but the company no longer has to rely on contractors to safely process confidential documents. PaperLab can completely break down the documents into paper fibers, so that any information on them will be completely destroyed.

Epson says PaperLab uses a technology called DryFiber, which itself consists of three separate processes: Fiberizing, Binding, and Forming. In the fiberization stage, the waste paper is converted into long, fine floc fibers. And this technology requires only a very small amount of water to keep the system at a certain level of humidity.

In the next step, the bonding stage, the user can choose from a wide variety of adhesives to be added to the fiberizing material to thicken, whiten or add color, fragrance and even flame retardant properties. Finally, during the forming stage, the fibers are formed into a pre-selected paper pattern. It is much like a 3D printer that extrudes a plastic wire according to a predetermined design, and PaperLab deposits a paper "wire" of fiber flower into a thin, fully usable paper.

Although strictly speaking, PaperLab is not a 3D printer, it is localized with 3D printing to localize the paper, enough to subvert (or eliminate) the paper recycling industry. Epson has already built a prototype of the PaperLab system and is preparing to commercialize it in 2016.
