Inoue and others from Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan have developed a degradable plastic that can greatly enhance ductility in view of the lack of ductility of ordinary degradable plastics. This degradable plastic can be used not only for the production of packaging materials and daily utensils but also as an auxiliary material for rubber.
Inoue Yoshio et al. used starch and fatty acids as raw materials to provide E. coli with nutrients such as acetic acid or glucose, and to adjust the incubation temperature and the acidity of the reaction solution so that a "copolymerization reaction" occurred to generate a polyester-based biodegradable plastic. Due to its neat molecular structure, the ductility is greatly improved, the quality is more uniform, and the hard and brittle weaknesses of ordinary degradable plastics are overcome.
