[Chinese Packaging Network News] As summer heats up, fruit shops are experiencing a surge in business. To meet customer demand, many stores have introduced boxed fruit services, with some even offering delivery to your doorstep. The service from merchants is indeed enthusiastic. However, what about the quality of these fruits? Many consumers worry whether such pre-cut fruits might harbor bacteria.
Cutting and boxing fruit can be done either on the same day or left for a while. When six boxes of fruit were purchased from several fruit supermarkets, customers asked when the fruits were cut. Most shopkeepers claimed that the fruits were freshly cut and no more than two hours had passed since they were prepared. Some also mentioned that the fruits were cut on the same day and were very fresh.
However, one fruit shop owner revealed that sometimes dozens of fruit platters cut in the morning couldn't be sold by midday and would be left for sale later, sometimes stored for up to a full day.
The boxed fruits may already be rotting. Although they look upscale and clean, you might not know that the fruits you're eating could have come from a rotten source. Despite this, many consumers are often blinded by their attractive appearance.
The bacterial load in boxed fruits is truly alarming. Six boxes of purchased fruit were tested in a lab, along with two and a half fresh watermelons (half wrapped in plastic). The results showed that coliform levels in the boxed fruit samples ranged from 24,000 mpn/100g and above, while the total colony count varied between 13,000 cfu/g and 504,000 cfu/g. Additionally, refrigerated watermelon samples without plastic wrap had significantly higher coliform counts compared to those covered with cling film, with over 20 times more bacteria.
Although China does not currently have national standards for the number of bacteria in fresh-cut fruits, existing regulations for fruit products state that the total colony count should not exceed 1,000 cfu/g and coliforms should not exceed 30 mpn/100g. In the experiment, the E. coli levels in the boxed fruits were tens of times higher.
According to experts, certain strains of E. coli can be harmful to humans and animals, especially infants and young birds, potentially causing severe diarrhea and sepsis. For individuals with weaker immune systems, consuming such boxed fruits could lead to stomach issues. Experts recommend buying whole, fresh fruits and consuming them as soon as possible after cutting.
