The interior of the self-cooled can has a small box filled with pressurized carbon dioxide gas. When pulling the lid on the sheet to open the can, a release valve connected to the sheet releases the pressurized carbon dioxide gas inside the box. When the gas is released, Its volume expands rapidly, causing a sharp drop in temperature. The released gas is quenched from the capsule to minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the temperature of the food in the can is lowered by about 40 degrees in 90 seconds.
Newly-developed beverage cans will reduce certain canned containers when used to hold beverages such as beer or soda, because the pressurized CO2 gas cartridges make up 1.5 ounces per 12-ounce can. Naturally, its cost will also increase by 5-7%. However, the research organization believes that the convenience that such cans will bring to people is self-evident.
