At Architectural Digest, they constantly honor architects and designers, but with a special focus in their annual AD100 issue. This is where they unveil their highly anticipated list of the most exciting talents in the design world. Many of the outstanding projects featured this month have been in the works for years, and AD has followed them closely over time—this is part of the process! It's the homeowners, without whom these inspiring spaces wouldn’t exist, who show the most patience, faith, and vision.
One common theme among many of this month’s stories is the strong bond between the client and the designer. The beautiful Malibu beach house featured on the cover was created by Ellen Pompeo and her long-time collaborator Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who considers her one of his closest friends. “We’ve known each other for so long,†says Bullard, “that we can anticipate what the other will love before even showing it to them.â€
About five years ago, Pamela Shamshiri met LA gallerist Shulamit Nazarian. Both agree that there was an instant “genuine bond†and a “strong emotional connectionâ€. Over the years, the pair worked together on several projects, including the renovation of Nazarian’s historic A. Quincy Jones home, which appears on another AD cover.
The tour concluded at the remarkable home designed by architect Bjarke Ingels for a Danish businessman who wanted to live with his family and had a passion for cars. According to Ingels, who succeeded brilliantly, the challenge was to create a space where the cars were part of the house, not just stored in a garage. A very smooth project!
