At Architectural Digest, they constantly honor architects and designers, but it's in the annual AD100 issue that they do so with special focus. This edition features their highly anticipated list of the most exciting talents in the design and architecture world. The remarkable projects featured this month have been in the works for years, and AD has often followed them closely before publishing—this is a process! The homeowners, who are essential to creating these inspiring and ambitious spaces, demonstrate incredible patience, faith, and vision.
One of the common themes in many of this month’s stories is the strong relationship between the client and the designer. The beautiful Malibu beach house on the cover was built by Ellen Pompeo and her long-time collaborator Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who considers her one of his closest friends. “We’ve known each other for so long,†says Bullard, “that we can predict what the other will appreciate before even showing it to them.â€
About five years ago, Pamela Shamshiri met LA gallerist Shulamit Nazarian. Both agree there was an immediate connection and a strong emotional bond. Over time, they transformed Nazarian’s historic A. Quincy Jones home, which appears on another AD cover.
The tour ended at the remarkable home designed by architect Bjarke Ingels for a Danish businessman who wanted to live with his family and value a car collection. According to Ingels, the challenge was to build a space where cars are integrated into the house, not just stored in a garage. The client made it look effortless.
