China's dairy packaging machinery industry needs to break through

In recent years, with the rapid growth of China's dairy industry, competition among various dairy products has intensified, driving the development of related processing and packaging machinery. Domestic dairy companies are facing a highly homogenized industrial structure, with competition focusing on milk sourcing, market capture, and technological upgrades. Except for a few major dairy giants, most companies are seeking to leverage their limited resource advantages, aiming to enhance economic efficiency in the market and secure space for survival and growth. Due to limited financial resources, companies aiming to overcome the "bottleneck" in dairy product development with constrained technical conditions must opt for cost-effective processing and packaging equipment with reasonable operational costs. While foreign machinery is often expensive, there is a growing preference for domestically produced alternatives that are more affordable. Although China’s domestic dairy packaging and processing machinery has developed a relatively complete system in common technologies and conventional equipment, it still lags behind in key components and advanced technologies. The contradiction in the development of dairy packaging machinery has been overlooked amid ongoing debates about milk sources, markets, and industry structures. The importance of packaging and processing technology in the industrial chain has been neglected. Currently, several challenges exist in the sector: the gap between the low-level primary products and the high safety standards required for end products. Milk, as a high-value food, demands strict microbiological control during processing and packaging. There remains a significant gap between China's microbial indicators for fresh milk and those of developed countries. This necessitates higher technical performance from processing and packaging equipment to ensure product safety. Every step of the process must be carefully controlled to minimize risks. However, dairy companies compete by differentiating their products, leading to artificial additives like thickening agents and flavoring, which complicate the processing requirements and increase the responsibility of packaging equipment. Common yogurt packaging methods include cup-style packaging (with four, six, or twelve cups), plastic bottles, glass bottles, roof packs, and aseptic packaging. Cup materials typically use PS sheets, while covers are made of aluminum-plastic composite films. Labels can be printed directly or via shrink film. Plastic bottles, such as BOPP and HDPE, offer durability and cost-effectiveness. Glass bottles, though traditional, are less convenient. Aseptic packaging allows long-term storage at room temperature, and new designs like Eklin pots and large plastic buckets are gaining popularity. With increasing market competition, innovative packaging solutions have become essential for capturing sales share. Companies like Heisia have developed versatile cup designs and user-friendly packaging machines. The Hyssia filling system is adaptable for various products, including pure milk, stirred yogurt, and fruit yogurt, supporting multi-functional operations. To reduce costs and improve efficiency, manufacturers are adopting flexible molding tools that allow multiple packaging styles on a single machine. This multi-purpose approach saves investment and increases productivity. However, breakthroughs in key technologies—such as UHT and aseptic systems—require not only R&D funding but also the ability to absorb and integrate foreign technologies. High-quality, multi-skilled talents are essential, yet they remain scarce. The industry faces challenges in macro guidance, with fragmented capital structures and limited collaboration. Many companies operate in isolation, lacking clear policy support or technical supervision. This hinders overall progress and keeps the sector lagging behind the fast-evolving dairy industry. To move forward, comprehensive strategies, stronger R&D efforts, and talent development are crucial for sustainable growth.
