Towards the era of remote printing with color management and remote proofing

Judging from the current trends in the world and the digital proofing companies that have been used, the digital proofing technology is actually quite mature. Basically, this technology is built on a digital network. In terms of the current practical situation, this trend is a foreseeable future .

1. Development Trend of Long-distance Printing Technology

(1) One input Many out-put application

The development of cross-platform and cross-media file formats such as XML and PDF greatly contributes to the use of communication processes and automatic production. Combined with the concept of Database, a single input information file (One input) and multiple output (Many output) as an application, in addition to the output of printed matter, other web pages, CD electronic media can use these files.

(2) Internet application and color management technology

The rapid and convenient network transmission and the advancement of file compression technology, as well as the application of color management technology, make the current network combined printing, which is only used for small files, gradually become remote proofing and remote distributed printing. (Figure 2)

(3) In the future, the printing industry will have the opportunity to act as an integrator of the multimedia digital world, using the professional advantages of the printing industry to change from the original Prepress to Premedia.

(4) In the future, the printing industry will become an information carrier service provider, media solution provider, and multimedia digital world integrator (integrating digital content data → digital content industry).

(5) From printing to information integration, including information application, digital graphic integration, and long-term development trends like document management, database application, security mechanism, electronic invoice billing, digital asset management, digital content publishing.

There are several key points in the development of long-distance printing technology. Its core key technologies are color management technology, PDF process, Hybrid dot and color standardization concepts. These keys will be the influencing factors that everyone needs to pay special attention to when developing long-distance printing.

2. ICC Profile Color Management System

(1) In order to solve the problem of incompatibility among color management system manufacturers, several computer and peripheral equipment manufacturers established the ICC-International Color Consortium in 1993, and established a standard format for color characteristic description files ICC standard format (Profile Specification).

(2) ICC defines the color profile of each device to support the establishment of the color characteristics of each device, that is, after processing the input device, display device, and output device through the standardized standard procedures, the so-called color profile is generated (ICC Profile) and embedded in (embed) image files, these files include PICT, EPS, TIFF and JFIF and other image files, and then the color profiles of different devices are connected to each other through different color space conversion modes.

(3) The ICM 2.0 file format (Image Color Manage-ment) is used to support the storage and application of ICC Profile on the operating platform of PC personal computer Windows 98 / NT4.0 or higher.

(4) On the Apple Macintosh operating platform, the file format of Color Sync 2.5 is used to support ICC Profile.

(5) ICC Profile is used to convert the color space between different devices in series. It provides a set of profile standards that various manufacturers can follow. At present, it has become a standard for profile profiles recognized by industry (Profile Standards). In the future, as long as the profile of each device meets ICC standards, color management software can be used to achieve the goal of maintaining color consistency.

3. Color quality control technology

It is mainly divided into two parts. One is color management of general printed materials, and the other is color quality control in digital files. Firstly, the control of general printed matter is introduced. The most basic problem of general printing is the problem of output position. Several common control methods are registered control analysis, full version density control, dot gain control and gray balance control.

The other is the quality evaluation of the ICC Profile color description file. When we enter an image file into the computer, the profile data generated on the computer is correct. You can use the established description file to add to this image. When it is added, it will have Obvious change. The Indian Research Center also develops compatible ICC Profile software technology, which can be used to evaluate whether the color space is incorrect, and to verify that the profile used is not normal.

Next, we should remind everyone to pay attention to the important points when doing color quality control:

(1) Selecting a digital proofing system on the market should be based on accuracy and stability; if these two requirements are not met, it is not a reliable digital proofing system.

(2) The main factors that generally affect the digital proofing system are: printing speed, operating cost and color management.

(3) Printing speed: In terms of speed, a high-resolution folio can be printed on the market within 10 minutes.

(4) Operating cost: mainly depends on the price of ink and special paper for proofing.

(V) Color management: It depends on accuracy and stability, and is also the most important factor. Even if the speed is faster and the cost is lower, if the printing effect cannot be predicted accurately and steadily, it may cause more problems in the subsequent printing operations Great economic and time loss.

(6) Color evaluation of digital proofing:

1. The methods commonly used to evaluate color are:

(1) Visual method-subjective evaluation (Color Management)

(2) Measurement method-objective evaluation (Device Calibration)

2. The key points of color evaluation:

(1) Single color block-Single Color Stimuli

(2) Measurement method-Test target test guide

(3) Complex Image-Complex Color Image

(4) Visual inspection method-Standard Test Image

3. Comparison of color evaluation

Type Subjective evaluation Objective evaluation method Visual method Measurement tool Test Image Standard image Test target Test guide use Color conversion equipment calibration

(7) Color difference

Finally, when we mention color control, there is a concept that must be mentioned, because in the end, regardless of the manufacturer, customer or printer, in order to maintain the consistency of the color of the last thing you see, you must pay attention to the problem of color difference.

1. Definition of Color Difference: Refers to the difference between the colors perceived by the eyes when comparing two color objects, referred to as ΔE.

2. Generally, ΔE refers to the color difference formula of CIELAB uniform color space formulated by CIE in 1976.

ΔE = [(L1-L2) 2+ (a1-a2) 2+ (b1-b2) 2] 1/2

3. Generally speaking

(1) Delta E> 6: unacceptable, the human eye can easily recognize the color difference.

(2) Delta E <4: acceptable, human eye can recognize the color difference, but it is not very obvious.

(3) Delta E <2: Human eyes can hardly recognize the color difference.
