Hotel integration into fitness becomes a trend

The integration of fitness elements into hotel experiences has become a major trend in the hospitality industry. As of May 22, 2015, more and more travelers are seeking ways to maintain their fitness routines while on the road. This growing demand has led to a collaboration between the fitness and hotel industries, creating a new wave of wellness-focused accommodations. Jason Moskal, Vice President of EVEN Hotel, noticed during conversations with guests that traditional hotels were not fully meeting the needs of travelers who wanted to stay active and healthy. He emphasized that maintaining health—both physically and mentally—is becoming a key concern for many people. This insight led InterContinental Hotels Group to launch EVEN, a new hotel brand dedicated to promoting wellness and fitness during travel. Moskal pointed out that this trend is no longer just a passing fad but an essential strategy for high-end hotels aiming to stay competitive. People are increasingly adopting lifestyles that prioritize physical and mental well-being, and they want to continue these habits even when they're away from home. Even though EVEN is one of the pioneers, other hotel chains have also started incorporating fitness and wellness into their offerings. For example, Wyndham’s TRYP brand introduced fitness rooms as early as 2010. The Westin Hotel, part of Starwood Hotels Group, has been organizing runWESTIN events since 2007, offering guided runs and partnering with New Balance for shoe rentals. These initiatives reflect a broader movement toward integrating health and fitness into the hotel experience. New players are also entering the market. Equinox, a premium fitness brand, recently launched its own hotel concept, featuring personalized training sessions, nutrition services, and organic beverages. Their flagship location opened in New York in 2018, with plans to expand to cities like Los Angeles, London, and Miami. Meanwhile, Soul Cycle, another brand under Equinox, opened a large studio at the South Beach Hotel in Miami, complete with bikes, dressing rooms, and clothing boutiques. EVEN Hotel emphasizes a holistic approach to wellness, focusing not only on exercise but also on good food, rest, and productivity. Each property includes a fitness center and wellness classes led by a chief health officer. Similarly, TRYP offers fitness-themed rooms equipped with treadmills, ellipticals, and sportswear. Westin has taken a special focus on runners, providing jogging tracks, guided morning runs, and partnerships with New Balance. They also offer VIP packages for marathon events, including pre-race meals and exclusive access. Despite differences in approach, the common goal is clear: to meet the rising demand for health-conscious travel. Surveys show that 80% of global consumers want to improve their physical and mental well-being, and affluent travelers are especially willing to pay for quality wellness experiences. While business travelers currently make up most of the hotel fitness users, leisure travelers are gradually showing more interest. Room rates for wellness-focused hotels vary, with EVEN offering stays from $140 to $180 per night, and TRYP's fitness rooms ranging between $440 and $480. These prices reflect the value placed on health and comfort in modern travel. As the trend continues to grow, hotels that embrace wellness will likely see increased demand and customer loyalty.
