Experience: Practicing a Long-distance Ride Selection of Equipment

The difficulties faced by long-distance cycling travel:

1. Ride for a longer time on poor roads 2. Load all camping supplies and clothing to suit a variety of weather conditions 3. Load multi-day foods 4. Load multi-day water 5. Unable to obtain for a long time Modern bike equipment and tools 6. Long rides

Overall considerations:

1. Loading: Multi-day water and food, spare parts, repair tools plus necessary luggage, the weight will usually reach 40kg or more. More people are needed in sparsely populated areas. Usually travelers will also bring cameras, films, maps, etc. What we need to consider is the ability to withstand considerable weight on the shelves and bags.

2. Reliability: This is the most important point for the selection of the car. For the cyclist, the only thing that is not available is the car.

3. Recoverability: Means to avoid possible difficulties and the ability to repair from failure.

4. Compatibility: When you have to bring a lot of special parts for specifications, should you consider using more general and more popular parts?

From the above we can come to the conclusion that weight does not appear to be so important for biking trips, and the extra 2 to 3 kilograms is not what is relative to the total weight. Carrying more spare parts and tools can improve the car's repairability and make you feel comfortable on the road.

Shelves and bags:

Large loads and bumps when riding on poor roads can easily damage shelves and bags. Shelves using steel pipes are usually stronger than aluminum and do not add much weight. This is especially true for the front shelf, where the front shelf of the steel pipe has a longer life. The weakness of the shelf is that only relying on a 5mm screw to support the weight can try to solve the problem by welding the shelf to the frame.

For most cheap bags, the plastic hooks used to hook the shelves are weak. The author and most long-distance cyclists respected the bag of Ortliebs. Vaude's shoulder bag was modeled on Ortliebs, but the hooking system was designed by himself.

Frame:

Many people also use a very common frame to travel a long distance, so this aspect is not very important. But when the frame can make your journey more enjoyable (relieve your pain). The author does not recommend the use of a mountain bike frame, but uses a frame designed for comfortable travel, such as Roberts and Orbit.

If you choose a mountain bike frame, you'd better use a swallow instead of a straight handle. The former is more comfortable and is more conducive to changing riding postures. Special travel (I guess it is a butterfly) is more comfortable than ordinary handlebars.

Another option is the Travel Frame (700C), provided its rims and tires meet your requirements. The authors recommend the use of 40mm (equivalent to 1.75 bar) tires as a compromise for a variety of road conditions.

An important issue is that the frame should have sufficient rigidity, especially in the rear triangle; after a soft rear triangle load, it will slam heavily when climbing a hill.

One of the reasons is that if it is broken, it is very troublesome before it is used. The second reason is that it is difficult to give shock absorbers to the shelves.

The repairability of the steel frame is better; the car of the old style does not follow the thief

Wheels: The main consideration is the generality of the specifications so that replacements and alternatives can be easily found.

1. The rim size (I chose the more common 26-inch and 700C translation)

26-inch: almost can be said to be international standards, 26-inch rims, inner tubes, tires are available everywhere. It is advisable to have a good quality rim before departure so that you can use it without a spare.

700C: The international standard of sports cars is quite popular in Europe, but tires are generally narrow, and they are not used much outside of Europe. They need to bring enough spares.

Wheels are plagued by heavy-duty long-distance rides, so spend more time comparing and choosing.

2. Hub: 36-hole is the world standard; try to choose a closed hub, and take a small amount of bearing lubricant with good water resistance, and perform maintenance every thousand kilometers.

3 tires:

Pattern: The main requirement is durability. Riding on poor roads, many of the tires' sides deteriorate faster than the tread, so there is no need to pay special attention to how hard the tread of the tire is. Side thicker flat tires (optical tires, pattern coherent mountain tires) are a good choice.

Width: Many people like to use 50mm tires, it is sufficient to meet a variety of road conditions, but the 37mm-40mm tire is a more compromise choice.

4. Inner tube: It is also required to be durable. The most expensive is not necessarily the best. Many inner tubes are more weight-oriented than strength. Try not to use thinner inner tubes with thicker tires.

Miscellaneous: (I picked a few translations)

1. Flywheel: In-flight is less prone to damage than outer-flight, but it is difficult to repair once it fails.

2. Chain: Before starting, replace the good chain and take a few chains for backup.

3. Bottle cage: Plastic is more difficult to damage than aluminum.

4. Pedals: Long-distance cycling rarely considers speed, so you don't have to use self-locking. Once the self-locking shoes are broken, it's very troublesome. Dual-use self-locking pedals can be considered.

5. Shoes: Long-distance cyclists prefer to choose outdoor sports shoes rather than mountain self-locking shoes, which have a relatively short life span. Bring a pair of sandals and change when you wade.

6. Bring lighting equipment, portable air pump and stopwatch.

Tools and Spare Parts: Bringing Combination Tools, Axle Removers, Crank Disassemblers, Brake Blocks, Backup Lines, Spare Tire, Tire Repair Tool, Several Screws

The last suggestion:

1. The rugged terrain often loosens the screws. Check regularly and tighten the screws. 2. Pay attention to the sound of the car. If any abnormalities are found, check immediately to find out the source of the sound. 3. Place some copies of cash and ID documents on the seal. The bag is hidden in the handlebars. Put money and important documents in the obscure bag.
4. Bring sunscreen 5. Prepare for adaptation to the plateau reaction and dry and hot climate. 6. If you have camping fuel, pay attention to safe storage. 7. Put some mothballs in your luggage to prevent uninvited guests such as fleas. 8. ID cards and sleeping bags Must be kept dry
