Recently, researchers at Duke University in the United States have developed an innovative solution using a simple 3D-printed device. Their groundbreaking work was published in the *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences*, detailing how they tackled this complex problem with a hardware-based approach rather than relying solely on software algorithms.
The device consists of a large, thick plastic tray with 36 small openings on one side, connected by honeycomb-like channels that lead to a central microphone. This design acts as a single-sensor system that combines acoustic metamaterials with compression sensing techniques. Unlike traditional methods that focus on signal processing, this approach leverages physical design to enhance sound separation.
According to the researchers, the key lies in the unique 3D-printed shapes of each channel. These shapes subtly alter how sound waves travel to the microphone, allowing the system to distinguish between different sound sources. As Yangbo Xie explained, while humans may not be able to tell the difference, the algorithm attached to the sensor can almost always identify which sound comes from where.
In their study, the team demonstrated that the device could correctly separate overlapping audio from three distinct sources with a success rate of 96.67%. This impressive accuracy has earned the method praise as a promising solution to the cocktail party problem. However, the current version is still quite large—comparable to a thick pizza—but the researchers believe it can be miniaturized for future applications.
Potential uses include hearing aids, acoustic imaging, and other real-time sound detection systems. With further optimization, this technology could soon find its way into everyday devices, making it easier for machines—and even humans—to pick out the right voice in a noisy environment.
