German company BMS has recently developed a polycarbonate (PC) film that is resistant to high energy radiation. The application of BMS's PC resin Makrofol LP209 film is aimed at titrating petri dishes, instrument boxes and graft packaging. This film can be used as a blood heat exchanger housing because of its high degree of transparency, allowing rapid detection, checking of blood flow rates and observation at any time.
The medical field is increasingly using gamma-rays and electron beam irradiation to sterilize equipment, especially disposables and instruments, but most plastics will be yellow after irradiation with gamma and electron beams.
