Yuan Guibin, a National People's Congress deputy and deputy general manager of Foshan Textile Machinery Co., Ltd., has proposed including sports and fitness expenses as well as medical check-ups under the scope of medical insurance. The proposal was made during this year’s two sessions, where healthcare and social security remained hot topics among delegates.
According to Yuan, while more people have enrolled in medical insurance since the implementation of the Social Insurance Law, the current system only covers medical treatment when an individual is hospitalized. It does not include routine health check-ups or preventive care, which has led to a situation where people tend to focus on treating illness rather than preventing it.
Many companies already provide health insurance to employees, which means they no longer cover the cost of regular physical exams. As a result, some workers may not receive necessary health screenings. This issue affects not only current employees but also retirees, the unemployed, and those with flexible employment, who often lack the motivation to take proactive steps toward their health.
To address this, Yuan suggested that health check-ups should be included in medical insurance coverage, encouraging people to take charge of their health. In addition, he proposed that sports and fitness activities could also be covered under medical insurance. By allowing a percentage of the personal insurance account to be used for fitness-related expenses, or by allocating an annual amount for such purposes, individuals would be motivated to lead healthier lifestyles.
This approach, Yuan believes, will help foster long-term exercise habits and promote disease prevention, ultimately contributing to better public health outcomes. By integrating preventive care into the medical insurance system, society can shift from reactive to proactive health management.
