Paper substrate electronic paper

Researchers from the Korea Machinery Research Institute successfully developed electronic display paper composed of light-emitting devices and sensors in 2007, which can be mass-produced using existing printing processes. This electronic paper uses inorganic luminescent materials as light-emitting devices, and uses paper and other materials as substrates. The principle of luminescence is that the luminescent material is coated on the substrate, and the characters and graphics are displayed through electroluminescence.

Paper-based electronic paper has many advantages. Its thickness is much lower than the existing electronic paper, and it can withstand greater bending or even folding. In addition, its impact resistance and high and low temperature display characteristics are greatly improved. The more important feature is that this electronic paper can be produced in mass production using ordinary printing processes, including cylinder printing processes, just like ordinary paper.

This paper-based electronic paper uses self-luminous materials instead of reflective display materials, which not only improves the response speed, but also makes it more comfortable to read and more adaptable to the environment, but its disadvantage is that it consumes more power. Paper-based electronic paper is not only soft but also very strong, and the graphics on the paper will not change when it is bent.

The paper-based electronic paper is manufactured using a layered printing process, without the need for special printers or printing systems. First, conductive ink is printed on the paper substrate to form a paper-based printed circuit board, then the luminescent material layer is printed at an appropriate position according to the design plan, and finally the transparent electrode is still printed using a printing process to connect the printed circuit board and the luminescent material.

At present, the resolution of paper-based electronic paper is still not high, and only supports monochrome display. But researchers say it has revealed the prospect of being able to produce disposable electronic paper quickly and cheaply, and will develop color paper-based electronic paper that supports RGB displays in the future.
