Toddler baking: Easter Nests

Easter nests are a fun and easy treat to make with kids, especially during the holiday season. They’re not only simple to prepare but also allow little ones to get hands-on with the process. This particular recipe is one of our favorites because it uses everyday ingredients that you might already have at home. To start, melt 8 oz (225g) of chocolate using either a double boiler or the microwave. Once melted, stir in 2 oz (50g) of marshmallows, 2 oz (50g) of butter, and 2 oz (50g) of Nutella, one ingredient at a time. This will help create a smooth, creamy mixture. While you're melting the chocolate, let your kids arrange the cake cases to make the nests easier later. Next, crumble 4 shredded wheat biscuits into small pieces. My daughter loved calling them "shredded weeds," which made the whole process more entertaining. Add these crumbs to the chocolate mixture and stir well. Let the mixture cool down a bit so it's not too hot for little fingers. Now comes the fun part—letting the kids take over! Give each child their own bowl and cake case. Encourage them to scoop the mixture into the cases and pat it down gently to form a little dip in the center. This is where they’ll place the mini chocolate eggs later. Once they've finished filling the nests, pop them into the fridge for a couple of hours to set. While waiting for the nests to firm up, we decided to do a quick taste test of the leftover mixture. It’s always a hit with the kids, and it gives them a sneak peek of what’s to come. After tasting, we placed a few mini chocolate eggs in each nest and left them to chill overnight. These Easter nests turned out adorable and delicious. Not only did my kids enjoy helping out in the kitchen, but they also felt proud of their creations. This recipe is perfect for fostering creativity and teaching basic cooking skills. Plus, it’s a great way to use up any leftover Easter chocolate! If you're looking for other creative baking ideas involving kids, consider trying Robin Oreo truffles for Christmas or mini Christmas cakes. For something a bit more adventurous, campfire cupcakes and reindeer pound cakes are sure to bring festive cheer to any occasion. Happy baking!
