The research team led by Professor Nakachi Kaiko of the University of Tokyo reported in the American Medical Journal "Molecular Therapy" that they first made mice that lost their immune function, and then injected human iPS cells into the mice. The cells develop into various cells and develop benign tumors. The research team found that hematopoietic stem cells produced by benign tumors can naturally transfer from the tumor to the bone marrow of mice and begin to make blood cells.
The research team then collected this hematopoietic stem cell and transplanted it into other mice whose bone marrow cells were damaged by radiation. As a result, the hematopoietic stem cells played a role in the mouse bone marrow, and began to make blood cells and flowed into the mice.
Nakachi Kaiko said: "In the treatment of blood diseases such as leukemia, bone marrow transplantation often faces the problem of insufficient bone marrow providers. The above new achievements can help develop treatment methods to replace bone marrow transplantation."
