Recently, I began using trekking poles as part of my daily routine during my first Minnesota winter. Having neglected regular physical therapy for years, I found myself struggling to move without frequent falls, especially on icy sidewalks. A friend recommended trekking poles, and I decided to try the **Ultra Z Folding Trekking Poles**. Initially, they were great—I walked faster and fell less. They were easy to adjust, changeable tips, and collapsible for travel. However, after about a year, only one of the four poles remained intact. Two broke entirely, and the company replaced them once.
Next, I borrowed a pair of **Trail Trekking Poles** in excellent condition. These felt robust and sturdy, particularly useful when standing in water or hiking through the desert. The non-slip tips were slightly problematic on hard surfaces, and they weren't foldable. Still, I appreciated their durability over four months of consistent use.
Currently, my favorite poles are the **Black Diamond Distance Z Trekking Poles**. I’ve been using them for eight months across the U.S., Europe, and Africa. I own three poles: a matching pair of Distance Z Trekking Poles and an additional pole, a newer model called the **Black Diamond Distance Women’s Carbon Z Foldable Poles**.
When strolling through Ouakam, Senegal, or shopping for mangoes, I typically rely on my **Distance Women’s Carbon Z Foldable Pole** as a cane. It’s incredibly lightweight (240 grams), easy to fold, and perfect for travel.
For longer hikes, trips to the beach, or when carrying a heavy backpack at the airport, I use my two **Distance Z Folding Trekking Poles**. They’re heavier (330 grams) with thicker grips, which I find reassuring and supportive. I love how solid they feel and how the grips provide a better grip when needed.

Both models are fantastic. I’ve never adjusted the tips myself—they were pre-installed at REI and have stayed intact. Folding them is straightforward, and they come in various lengths. I chose the shortest option, which works perfectly for me. However, they might not suit everyone depending on height and length preferences. It’s wise to test them at a store like REI before buying.
One of my favorite features is the simple folding mechanism. Pressing a small silver button releases the poles, allowing me to fold them and slip them into my backpack before meetings or keeping them by my side during flights.
Here’s a quick summary of each pole:
1. **Ultra Z Folding Trekking Poles**: Affordable ($85.99) with changeable tips. Adjustable for height and collapsible, but not durable enough for long-term use.
2. **Trail Trekking Poles**: Adjustable for height but not foldable. Sturdy in challenging environments like water or desert. Costs $119.95.
3. **Distance Women’s Carbon Z Foldable Poles**: Lightweight and foldable. Fixed height but available in different sizes. Expensive at $189.95.
4. **Distance Z Folding Trekking Poles**: Solid and durable ($139.95). Fixed height but available in various sizes. My favorite—comfortable grip and easy to fold.
