As the crisp air of autumn sets in, humans might be cozying up in their favorite sweaters and turning on the heaters. But for much of the animal kingdom, it marks the start of a tough season where survival becomes paramount. One species particularly affected by these seasonal changes is the humble hedgehog.

Right now, hedgehogs are busy preparing for hibernation, and it’s a race against time. The young ones need to pack on the pounds quickly, while their hardworking moms are doing their best to keep everyone fed. Unfortunately, underweight hedgehogs often struggle to survive hibernation. That’s why we frequently see them foraging during the day in autumn, desperate for sustenance. At Secret World Wildlife Rescue, many of the hedgehogs we admit are either malnourished or have had their nests disturbed. After thorough checks for pests and injuries, they’re moved to our specialized hedgehog hospital, affectionately called 'Hogwarts', where they can rest and recuperate in a calm, dark setting.

Hedgehogs absolutely adore cozy spots to build their nests, and thanks to a truly generous donation of cardboard boxes from Kite Packaging, we now have the ideal homes for them. The standard CDW120912 boxes, which are sealed at one end, are perfect for creating snug environments. First, we line the bottom with newspaper, followed by hay to serve as warm bedding. It’s exactly what these little critters need to feel safe and secure. Each box is then placed inside a secure 'pod' equipped with food and water—cat biscuits and wet cat food being firm favorites. These pods are cleaned daily, and the Kite Packaging boxes make this process far more efficient; the entire box, along with the hedgehog, can be removed, allowing for quick cleaning and reassembly of the pod.

Once the hedgehogs reach a healthy weight—typically over 550 grams—they can be released back into the wild if the weather permits. When temperatures drop consistently below freezing, they’ll begin hibernating, though they may wake periodically to feed if the weather warms up.

Every year, we care for around 700 hedgehogs, so we go through an immense number of boxes.
