As autumn rolls around, it's a time of cozy sweaters and crisp air for many of us. But for wildlife, it marks the beginning of some of the toughest months ahead. Animals like hedgehogs face unique challenges as they prepare for winter, and here at Secret World Wildlife Rescue, we're doing everything we can to help them through this crucial season.

Hedgehogs are especially vulnerable right now because this is when they typically have their second litter. It’s a race against time for both mothers and their young to build up enough weight to survive hibernation. Many underweight hedgehogs end up being brought to us after being found out during the day, scavenging for food because they're desperately hungry. Sometimes, they come to us due to disturbances in their nests. Once they've been examined and treated for any injuries or parasites, they move on to our specialized 'Hogwarts' hedgehog hospital where they can rest and gain weight in a calm, dark setting.

One of the things hedgehogs absolutely adore is a snug spot to make their nests. Thanks to an incredibly generous donation of cardboard boxes from Kite Packaging, we now have the ideal space for these little creatures. We use the standard CDW120912 box, which we seal at one end. Inside, we line the box with newspaper and fill it with hay to create a warm, comfortable bed. These boxes provide just the right amount of security and comfort that hedgehogs need to feel safe and secure. Each box is then placed inside a secure 'pod,' equipped with food and water—cat biscuits and canned cat food are always popular choices. The pods are cleaned daily, and thanks to the sturdy design of the Kite Packaging boxes, this process has become much simpler and more efficient. The entire box, along with the hedgehog inside, can simply be removed, allowing the pod to be cleaned quickly and efficiently before being reassembled.

Once hedgehogs reach a healthy weight—usually over 550 grams—they can be released back into the wild if the weather conditions are favorable. Hibernation begins when temperatures drop below freezing for seven consecutive days, though hedgehogs may wake up periodically if the weather warms up enough to feed.
