One Lamp Can Make All the Difference

The story of Secto Design began with a single lamp and a unique connection. Tuula Jusélius, the founder, first met Seppo Koho, a young Finnish architect and designer, when he was still a student at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. At the time, the school had launched a program to connect emerging designers with established companies. Jusélius placed an ad looking for a talented young designer and received eight applications. From those, she selected three for interviews, including Seppo.

That morning, Seppo called her, excited and wide-eyed. He hadn’t slept all night—he’d been sketching an entire collection of furniture. His passion and dedication left a lasting impression. From that day on, Seppo became the only designer for Secto, and the partnership has lasted decades.

The collaboration between Jusélius and Koho has stood the test of time, outlasting fleeting design trends. “Seppo always has new ideas—enough to keep us busy,” Jusélius says. Rather than chasing trends, Secto focuses on creating timeless pieces—design icons meant to be cherished for a lifetime. Working with the same designer has helped maintain a cohesive and distinctive style across the collection.

Initially, they aimed their designs at Japanese and Finnish markets, but the brand soon gained international recognition. Today, a Secto lamp fits perfectly in a Middle Eastern palace or a bustling bookstore in São Paulo.

When asked about their bestseller, Jusélius doesn’t hesitate. “It has to be Octo,” she says without a second thought. She recalls using the first Octo shade in her summer cottage, placing it on top of her sofa table while working nearby. “Every time I took a break, my eyes would naturally go to the lamp,” she explains. Koho believed that light should never be harsh or direct—it should be soft, gentle, and inviting. The warm glow and oval shape of the shade created a calming atmosphere, perfect for focus and reflection.

“I think that’s the secret of our shades,” Jusélius muses. “They’re like magnets of harmony.”

Secto Design lamps are more than just lighting—they create an atmosphere. They balance form and feeling, transforming spaces into welcoming, peaceful environments. “For Seppo, lamps are never just lamps,” Jusélius says. “He’s an architect, so he thinks like one. That’s how he approaches design.” Each lamp shade he creates has a sense of space, almost like a cocoon. It's both comforting and striking, like a chameleon in design—subtle yet powerful.
